John McCain picks Alaska governor Sarah Palin as Republican running mate
On his 72nd birthday, Mr McCain unveiled Mrs Palin, 44, on stage in Dayton, Ohio. She is a former beauty queen and mother of five whose eldest son, aged 19, is an American soldier due to deploy to Iraq next month. Her youngest son, just four months, has Down syndrome.
The decision was kept secret until just two hours before a grinning Mr McCain made the announcement before a raucous crowd that serenaded him with “Happy Birthday”.
Mr McCain hailed Mrs Palin, who is a lifelong hunter and gun rights advocate, for her “strong principles, fighting spirit and deep compassion”. He declared: “She’s exactly who this country needs to help us fight the same old Washington politics of me first and country second.”
