Millionaires ask Congress to raise their taxes

http://money.cnn.com/2011/11/16/news/economy/tax_millionaires/index.htm?hpt=hp_c1

WASHINGTON (CNNMoney) -- A group of two dozen millionaires stormed Capitol Hill on Wednesday, demanding lawmakers raise their taxes.
"We want to pay more taxes," said California millionaire Doug Edwards, a former marketing director for Google (GOOG, Fortune 500). "If you're fortunate, and you make more than a million dollars a year, you ought to pay more taxes."
The millionaires want Congress to allow the tax cuts passed during the George W. Bush administration to expire. Some want higher taxes generally.

New York (CNN) -- Cities facing angry protests from the Occupy movement braced Thursday for what could be the largest demonstrations yet.
From New York to Los Angeles, organizers were calling for a "mass day of action" to mark two months since the movement began.
In New York, where the movement began as Occupy Wall Street, the planned events included "shut down Wall Street;" "occupy the subways," a plan to gather at 16 hubs, and "take the square," a reference to Foley Square, across from City Hall.
"Enough of this economy that exploits and divides us. It's time we put an end to Wall Street's reign of terror and begin building an economy that works for all," the organizing website occupywallst.org said, adding, "before the Stock Exchange, we will exchange stories rather than stocks."
Organizers also plan a march across the Brooklyn Bridge.
A heavy police presence was in place Thursday morning as protesters gathered for the early morning demonstration against Wall Street.

War between Rich & Poor -- Americans' new reality

Whatever Obama and the FED is doing is making "Wealth disparity" greater than ever before.

This happened since Bush & 911.

The Obama duping Americans and running up 1 trillion of US Debt is another example.

What do you expect when millions of Americans are going bankrupted and over 50 millions of Americans are on food stamp and assistance.

  • More people tapped food stamps to pay for groceries in September as the recession and lackluster recovery have prompted more Americans to turn to government safety net programs to make ends meet.

Some 42.9 million people collected food stamps last month, up 1.2% from the prior month and 16.2% higher than the same time a year ago, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Nationwide 14% of the population relied on food stamps as of September but in some states the percentage was much higher. In Washington, D.C., Mississippi and Tennessee – the states with the largest share of citizens receiving benefits – more than a fifth of the population in each was collecting food stamps.

US October Net Capital Inflow Falls, China Still Buyer
| 15 Dec 2010 | 10:05 AM ET

Foreigners cut their purchases of U.S. securities in October, though China still raised its massive U.S. government debt holdings to an 11-month high above $900 billion, the U.S. Treasury Department said on Wednesday.

The United States attracted a net long-term capital inflow of $27.6 billion in October, compared to a downwardly revised $77.2 billion inflow the prior month.

Net overall capital inflows, which include short-term instruments such as Treasury bills, fell to $7.5 billion, from a downwardly revised $80.1 billion in September.

Net foreign purchases of Treasurys fell, though China, the United States' largest foreign creditor, increased Treasury purchases by $23.3 billion to $906.8 billion, the highest since November 2009.

$860 billion tax-cut deal: Cost breakdown
By Jeanne Sahadi, senior writer
December 10, 2010: 05:03 PM EST
The Senate version of the tax-cut deal brokered by the White House and Republicans earlier this week is estimated to cost roughly $860 billion.

The Senate will take its first vote on the bill on Monday.

But even if the Senate passes the bill, House passage is far from guaranteed given many House Democrats' bitter opposition to the compromise framework in its current form. Unless they're allowed to make key changes, they have said they will not bring the bill to the House floor.

The White House, meanwhile, has said if any major changes are made, the whole deal could unravel.

About half of the measures in the tax-cut bill might be considered new short-term stimulus, meaning they may add to the deficits for two more years, but could help maintain the economic recovery and help spur economic activity and job creation.

Of course, there is some disagreement over just how stimulative some of the measures will be.

Many economists, for instance, don't consider an extension of the Bush tax cuts stimulus, because it merely keeps current rates in place. But letting taxes go higher, they say, could impede growth.

Several other measures are intended as pro-growth stimulus, including a break on how much is deducted from workers' paychecks for Social Security and tax incentives to encourage businesses to step up their investments.

Deficit hawks have been saying that a short-term run-up in debt would be acceptable if it is paired with a serious long-term deficit-reduction plan.

The proposed deal skips that last part, though the president has said he and his budget team will review the recommendations for debt reduction made last week by his debt panel. In particular, he said he would pursue tax reform, a key element in the debt panel's plan.
Nevertheless, deficit hawks said the tax-cut deal without any formal commitment to debt reduction is "utterly exasperating."

Following is a breakdown on some of the key measures and their costs, based on revenue estimates from the Joint Committee on Taxation, unless otherwise noted.

Bush tax cuts: $544.3 billion. The package would extend the Bush tax cuts for everyone for two years.

The bulk of that cost -- $463 billion -- is for the extension of cuts for families making less than $250,000, including two years of relief for 2010 and 2011 for the middle class from the Alternative Minimum Tax.

The rest -- $81.5 billion -- is attributable to the extension of cuts that apply to the highest income families.

The cost of extending all the tax cuts over 10 years would have been $3.7 trillion.

Unemployment benefits: $56.5 billion. The package would also leave in place for 13 months the option to file for extended federal unemployment benefits -- which go as high as 99 weeks in states hit hardest by job loss. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the measure would cost $56.5 billion.

Social Security tax break: $111.7 billion. The package would also offer workers a payroll tax holiday worth 2 percentage points next year, so that instead of paying 6.2% on their first $106,800 of wages, they will only have to pay 4.2%. The measure would cost $112 billion.

Individual tax credits: $8.3 billion. The compromise framework would also extend for two years the increased value of a number of tax credits that benefit low- and middle-income tax filers, such as the earned income tax credit, the child credit and a revamped tax credit for college costs. The measure would cost $8 billion.

Business tax breaks: $69 billion. The bill contains more than 40 business tax breaks. Some, like an extension of the research and development credit, has drawn bipartisan support and is typically renewed annually. But also included are roughly $11 billion worth of energy credits and a new temporary option for businesses to write off 100% of their expenses in 2011. That measure would cost $21 billion.

The tax-cut and UM xtn

The tax-cut and UM xtn will not create jobs.

It just added another 3.3 trillion debt.

Any sane mind would wonder about anything these economists and politicians are say, for the most of them, since they have led Americans and America to bankruptcies while the very few has gotten rich by misleading mass. It is ludicrous that extending unemployment benefits will create jobs for they will spend the money to MAINTAIN the expenses which they were incurring ever since being lay-off.

Democratic procedural votes on extending Bush tax cuts fail in Senate

By the CNN Wire StaffcnnAuthor = "By the CNN Wire Staff";
December 4, 2010 11:45 a.m. EST

Washington (CNN) -- Two Senate procedural votes on Democratic measures to extend George W. Bush-era tax cuts for people who are not super wealthy failed on Saturday, preventing the measures from moving forward.

The votes sought to extend the Bush tax cuts for families making under $250,000 and $1 million, respectively.

Both votes garnered the support of 53 senators, but the Democrats needed 60 votes to end debate.

Despite the realization that neither would get the 60 votes to succeed, many Democrats said before the vote they wanted to get on-the-record in support of extending the lower rates to lower earners. They also want to contrast their ideas with Republican proposals to extend tax cuts for everyone, even those who are very wealthy.

"I think we want to lay it out there," Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, said on Friday. "Who's for which approach on this? That's why we're doing it."

"There are no signs that millionaires are suffering in this economy. It's everybody below that," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-California. "You have to stand up for what you believe and you have to vote on what you believe."

Both votes were on Democratic amendments and included extensions of other expiring tax programs as well as the extension of benefits for the long-time unemployed.

A Republican leadership aide dismissed the Democratic effort as "political show-votes."

http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/12/04/senate.tax.vote/index.html?hpt=T1

Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, the outgoing House speaker, slammed the Republicans’ insistence on extending the cuts for the top two marginal rates, saying: “Giving $700 billion to the wealthiest people in America increases the deficit, and the record shows that it does not create jobs.”

Seventh Generation CEO and founder Jeffrey Hollender

http://www.newsweek.com/2010/10/07/why-some-millionaires-want-their-tax-cuts-to-end.print.html

Although Congress has decided to hold off on voting on the fate of the Bush-era tax cuts until after the November election, the delay has not slowed down the efforts of some wealthy millionaires. The 700 or so members of a Massachusetts-based group called the Responsible Wealth Project have spent the last several months courting politicians to make their case, arguing that the country simply cannot afford to keep tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and that, as billionaires and millionaires, they hardly need that cash. NEWSWEEK’s Nancy Cook recently spoke with one of the group’s members, the cofounder of Seventh Generation, Jeffrey Hollender. Hollender talked about his disdain for the current tax code, the need for more compassion among the wealthy, and the way being rich often seems relative. Excerpts:

NEWSWEEK: So why do you oppose extending the tax cuts for families that make more than $250,000 a year?

Hollender: This is a time when the wealthiest Americans need to give back to the country. I know this well, as someone who has been financially successful, the vast array of benefits available to me that are not available to other people. It’s a moral question, but it’s also equally economic, because I don’t necessarily need everyone to agree with my morals and my perspectives. We can agree that the country can’t afford the tax cuts. This is the absolute wrong time, because where is that money going to be made up from? It’s going to come from social services. The government will have to reduce expenses, probably by providing fewer benefits for less affluent Americans. I can’t remember the government dealing with economic problems in a way that has inflicted pain on me, but that’s the not the case if you’re living below the poverty level.

* Does Raising Taxes on Rich Hurt the Economy?

What kind of organizing has the group you’re involved with been doing?

As with any kind of legislation, it is hard to maintain the same level of pressure on the government. Politicians’ attention drifts, but a few weeks ago, I was in Washington, D.C., visiting with senators and congressmen as part of a business group to discuss a broader range of issues. We’ve seen the Republicans back off on continuing the tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans at the moment, but who knows what happens after the midterm elections if they pick up more seats?

In this climate, with the growing gap between the rich and the poor, do you feel like rich people are afraid to openly talk about their views on the tax cuts, especially after a University of Chicago professor blogged about feeling cash-strapped and was then widely criticized for his views?

I’m an opinionated person on many issues, but there is no issue that stirs greater passion than issues that have to do with money. I got more threatening e-mails than anything I have ever spoken about in my life after speaking out against the tax cuts. There is one group who philosophically say, “The last thing I want to do is to give any more money to the government for any reason.” Those are people who may or may not be affluent or object to big government, but you know, somehow sadly, there is another group of people for whom no matter how much they have, they never think they have enough. They always think they need to have more. It’s a sad state in this country when those of us who are so privileged fight for more rather than fight for those among us who have so little. People tell me to keep my hand out of their pocket—that they don’t want me giving their money away—but letting the tax cuts expire is a small step to what’s required for a more equitable wealth distribution. Why should I be able to deduct my second mortgage, for instance? If you have two houses, do you need a deduction on your second house? There are so many benefits the wealthy have.

What else would you like to see the government do to close the gap between the poor and the wealthy?

The tax code is a disaster. It needs to be simplified. There is a huge amount of taxes collected out of people’s paychecks. Unfortunately, we tax too much of the good stuff, like income, and not enough things that pollute our air or that cause many of the problems we face. We have an economic system that encourages bad things and bad behavior. Why should organic food cost more than nonorganic food? If you want to create that kind of negative impact, you should have to pay for the right to do that. I really think that we send very confusing messages to the marketplace and that makes it hard for people to do the right thing.
Olivier Douliery / ABACAUSA-Corbis

Photos: There's Rich and Then There's Super-Rich
Net-Worth Smackdown: Rich Versus Super-Rich

If the tax cuts do expire, where would you like to see that money go?

There are two answers to that question. One, we need to make investments in this country to make us more competitive and to take better care of our citizens. We need to invest in things like infrastructure, so everyone has access to high-speed Internet and so we also can take better care of the poorer among us. But the other issue of equal importance is that we as a country have lost our way. In a global economy you need to have an economic strategy like China. You can’t do everything well. You have to say, “We’re going to be the leading manufacturer of global technology.” We need to decide in this country what we’re going to be the best at and invest in education and invest in starting business in those sectors that we know over the next decade will create jobs. But now, it’s almost taboo to talk about government discussing a plan for our economy. We need to make strategic long-term investments.

Do you think you approach this subject from a different vantage because you both grew up with money and then created your own wealth as well? Do you think the self-made wealthy may have a different experience?

I felt so uncomfortable about my family’s money that I left home when I was 17. It’s a possible viewpoint if you came from a much less affluent background, I could see someone having a more hard-edged attitude about money—like, “I made it all myself, so let me keep every penny I can.” [But] I would hope that someone who came from a less affluent background would have more compassion. The challenge is that I don’t believe in starting out poor or starting out rich. A lot of it is luck, and we’re standing on the backs of those who came before us.

Fed Bernanke 60min 2

(CBS) Friday's unemployment number was a troubling surprise -up from 9.6 percent to 9.8 percent. The economists who decide such things say the recession ended in 2009.

But this is the worst recovery the nation has ever seen. Ben Bernanke is concerned. As chairman of the Federal Reserve, Bernanke has enormous power over the world economy. And he has used that power in ways that the world has never seen.

During the panic of 2008, he committed trillions of dollars to rescue the financial system. And the Fed dropped interest rates nearly to zero.

Now, in a new move that has become controversial, Bernanke intends to commit another $600 billion to hold down interest rates.

Chairmen of the Fed rarely do interviews. But this week, Bernanke feels he has to speak out because he believes his critics may not understand how much trouble the economy is in. We wanted to know whether we're headed for another recession, whether Congress should extend the Bush tax cuts.

But first we wanted to talk about unemployment which has been at 9.5 percent or more for 16 months.

Interview with Ben Bernanke
On "60 Minutes" this week, Scott Pelley interviewed Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, discussing a wide range of economic issues. "60 Minutes Overtime" presents unaired excerpts from that interview.

Chairman Ben Bernanke: The unemployment rate is just not going down. Unemployment is just about the same as it was in mid-2009, when the economy started growing. So, that's a major concern. And it looks that at current rates, that it may take some years before the unemployment rate is back down to more normal levels.

Scott Pelley: We lost about eight million jobs from the peak. And I wonder how many years you think it will be before we get all those jobs back?

Bernanke: Well, you're absolutely right. Between the peak and the end of last year, we lost eight and a half million jobs. We've only gotten about a million of them back so far. And that doesn't even account the new people coming into the labor force. At the rate we're going, it could be four, five years before we are back to a more normal unemployment rate. Somewhere in the vicinity of say five or six percent.

Four or five years. And Bernanke told "60 Minutes" something else that makes that even more painful.

Bernanke: The other aspect of the unemployment rate that really concerns me is that more than 40 percent of the unemployed have been unemployed for six months or more. And that's unusually high. And people who are unemployed for such a long time, their skills erode. Their attachment to the labor force diminishes and it may be a very, very long time before they find themselves back in a normal working position.

Bernanke was appointed in 2006 by President Bush and reappointed by President Obama. He grew up in Dillon, S.C., the son of a drugstore owner. He studied economics at Harvard and MIT and chaired the economics department at Princeton.

Pelley met Bernanke Tuesday (Nov. 30) in the Thompson Library on the campus of The Ohio State University. He was in Columbus on one of his frequent trips to hear how people are coping with the economy.

Earlier in the day he heard from the CEOs of Ford and IBM but also from small business owners who told him they were having trouble getting financing from banks.

Pelley: The major banks are racking up profits in the billions. Wall Street bonuses are climbing back up to where they were. And yet, lending to small businesses actually declined in the third quarter. Why is that?

Bernanke: A lot of small businesses are not seeking credit, because, you know, because their business is not doing well, because the economy is slow. Others are not qualifying for credit, maybe because the value of their property has gone down. But some also can't meet the terms and conditions that banks are setting.

Pelley: Is this a case of banks that were eager to take risks that ruin the economy being now unwilling to take risks to support the recovery?

Bernanke: We want them to take risks, but not excessive risks. We want to go for a happy medium. And I think banks are back in the business of lending. But they have not yet come back to the level of confidence that, or overconfidence, that they had prior to the crisis we want to have an appropriate balance.

Bernanke's first interview ever as Fed chairman came in 2009 shortly after the panic.

It was then that he gave "60 Minutes" and Scott Pelley a rare opportunity to see the Federal Reserve headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Last month, Bernanke announced the Fed's intent to buy $600 billion in U.S. Treasury securities, which is supposed to have the effect of lowering rates on long term loans for things like cars and homes.

Bernanke wanted to emphasize that these are the Fed's own reserves. It's not tax money. It does not add to the federal deficit.

Bernanke: It has to do with two aspects. The first is unemployment. The other concern I should mention is that inflation is very, very low, which you think is a good thing and normally is a good thing. But we're getting awfully close to the range where prices would actually start falling.

Bernanke turns obfuscatory

Dec 6, 2010 10:24 EST Felix Salmon

When Ben Bernanke appeared on “60 Minutes” in March 2009, he was immediately embraced by middle America and overnight became considered the foremost explainer of economic concepts to the nation. This time around, Bernanke’s much more embattled. And his answers are much less clear, much more political, and much more contentious. This is not how impartial technocrats should speak:

One myth that’s out there is that what we’re doing is printing money. We’re not printing money. The amount of currency in circulation is not changing. The money supply is not changing in any significant way.

Yes, Ben, you are printing money. It’s how you pay for those Treasury bonds you’re buying. Greg Ip says so, and so does Scott Grannis, who helpfully provides this chart from the first round of QE:

Base weekly 97.jpg

Look at the y-axis, and you’ll see that $600 billion is a lot of money, even if it’s less than we saw in QE1. Clearly the monetary base is changing in a significant way.

Bernanke continued with this:

Pelley: Can you act quickly enough to prevent inflation from getting out of control?

Bernanke: We could raise interest rates in 15 minutes if we have to. So, there really is no problem with raising rates, tightening monetary policy, slowing the economy, reducing inflation, at the appropriate time. Now, that time is not now.

Pelley: You have what degree of confidence in your ability to control this?

Bernanke: One hundred percent.

Bernanke’s first response doesn’t actually answer Pelley’s question: Pelley didn’t ask how long it would take to raise interest rates, he asked how long it would take to get inflation under control. Obviously, it would take longer than 15 minutes. How much longer, Bernanke doesn’t say. (And, sadly, Pelley doesn’t push him.)

And Bernanke’s second response is a lie. Or if it isn’t, he should be fired immediately. No central bank governor can or should ever have 100% confidence in anything: only a psychopath who will never change his mind can say that. The Fed’s ability to control inflation is a dark and mysterious thing; it’s not some kind of iron-clad law of physics.

BBernanke knows that he has friends at “60 Minutes”, and indeed they let him run down his talking points, giving no pushback along the way. He wouldn’t get away with this kind of performance if he started giving Trichet-style press conferences. Which is one reason I suspect that’s not going to happen.

Let Bush Tax Cut Expire

A significant production problem with new high-tech $100 bills has caused government printers to shut down production of the new notes and to quarantine more than one billion of the bills in huge vaults in Fort Worth, Texas and Washington, DC, CNBC has learned.

The new $100 note has highly sophisticated security features.

Initially scheduled for release in February of 2011, the new bills were announced with great fanfare by officials at the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve in April.

At the time, officials announced the new bills would incorporate sophisticated high-tech security features, including a 3-D security strip and a color-shifting image of a bell designed to foil counterfeiters.

But the production process is so complex, it has instead foiled the government printers tasked with producing billions of the new notes.

An official familiar with the situation told CNBC that 1.1 billion of the new bills have been printed, but they are unusable because of a creasing problem in which paper folds over during production, revealing a blank unlinked portion of the bill face.

The total face value of the unusable bills, $110 billion, represents more than ten percent of the entire supply of US currency on the planet, which a government source said is $930 billion in banknotes. For now, the unusable bills are stored in the vaults in "cash packs" of four bundles of 4,000 each, with each pack containing 16,000 bills.

Officials don’t know exactly what caused the problem. "There is something drastically wrong here," a person familiar with the situation said. "The frustration level is off the charts."

QE, BAILOUT, DEFICIT -- NIGHTMARES

Financially and politically, it's no brainer -- even though media is hyped by the few. Let the tax cut expire as it was only used to feed the greed in the past and as well as in the future -- further destroying Americans and America.

Furthermore, economically, it does not make much difference even though we could assume that Americans will spend the difference from tax rate.

The tax cut amount in the hands of the people will not make much difference as most of Americans are spending what they need to spend. The tax rate is gradual anyway, so those who would spend all tax cut saving would have spend money anyway with no or very little impact. And higher income group does not spend money just because tax rate impact.

Bush has figuratively destroyed America by rescuing the banks with 700 billion before he left. Now Bernanke and Geithner along with politicians are destroying America and Americans as shown below how they are robbing Americans and America.

Now the saved banks are destroying America for US Government has to operate with the debt from the Fed Reserve which Americans paid for their fraud and corruption. 50% of US Tax Income is paying for the interest to the Fed Reserve, and it will soon be 100% Tax Income to pay interest to Fed Reserve when interest rate goes up by only a couple of points. This nightmare will be hyperbole as time passes by for all of Americans will be paying for interest to Fed Reserve -- and just to pay interest, tax rate has to be raised. Government can't operate -- so more money is borrowed from the fraudulent Fed Reserve. This vicious and detrimental cycle will take all of Americans and America to death spiral. Not only America, but also All around the globe.

If Bush has let banks to fail, American tax payer of 600 billion could be saving Americans and America. Bush again destroyed America. Americans must act now and save ourselves from destructive and detrimental death spiral -- as well as all around the globe for the same greed is defrauding all.

Quote:
.......... The federal debt has increased by more than 50% since 2006, due to a collapsed economy and the highly controversial decision to bail out the banks. By the end of 2009, the debt was up to $12.3 trillion; but the interest paid on it ($383 billion) was actually less than in 2006 ($406 billion), because interest rates had been pushed to extremely low levels. Interest now eats up nearly half the government’s income tax receipts, which are estimated at $899 billion for FY 2010. Of this, $414 billion will go to interest on the federal debt. If interest rates were to rise just a couple of percentage points, servicing the federal debt would consume over 100% of current income tax receipts, and taxes might have to be doubled." ...............

US Debt Panel Seeks Greater Support Before Vote: Report
| 29 Nov 2010 | 06:05 AM ET

The chairmen of the White House's debt-reduction commission are making changes to their draft proposal in a move to broaden support before Wednesday's vote, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.

Democrat Erskine Bowles and former Republican Sen. Alan Simpson need 14 of the 18 members of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform to support their proposal in order to issue a formal recommendation, the newspaper said.

The recommendation could then be voted on by Congress.

Winning 14 votes appears unlikely, the newspaper said, citing people familiar with the matter.

The details of the changes were not disclosed, but they were designed to incorporate suggestions made by some of the members of the commission, the newspaper said in its electronic edition.

Earlier this month, Bowles and Simpson proposed a series of changes to U.S. spending and tax policy in areas such as Medicare, Social Security, defense spending that would hold down the growth of the federal debt by roughly $3.8 trillion by 2020.
